China’s Largest Civilian Cargo Drone: A Leap Forward in UAV Technology

China Advances in Civilian Drone Technology with Largest Unmanned Cargo Aircraft

China, the world’s leading drone manufacturer, has achieved a significant milestone with the successful flight of China’s largest civilian cargo drone designed for civilian use. This marks a major step forward in the nation’s push to expand the use of autonomous aerial vehicles (UAVs) across various sectors, from deliveries to passenger transport.

    Unmanned Cargo Aircraft Takes Flight

The twin-engine drone, capable of carrying a payload of 2 metric tons, took to the skies on Sunday for its maiden flight in Sichuan province, according to state media reports. Developed by Sichuan Tengden Sci-tech Innovation Co., China’s largest civilian cargo drone completed a 20-minute test flight, showcasing its potential to revolutionise cargo transportation in China.

With a wingspan of 16.1 metres (52.8 feet) and a height of 4.6 metres (15 feet), the drone is slightly larger than the widely recognised Cessna 172 light aircraft. This significant size and payload capacity underscore China’s ambition to lead in the development of large-scale drones for civilian use.

    Expanding China’s Low-Altitude Economy

The successful test flight of the Tengden-built drone is part of a broader effort by China’s drone manufacturers to increase payload capacities. This initiative aligns with the government’s strategic push to develop a low-altitude economy. By 2030, China’s aviation regulators expect this sector to grow into a 2-trillion-yuan ($279-billion) industry, a substantial increase from 2023 figures.

This advancement follows the June debut of another significant cargo drone, developed by the state-owned Aviation Industry Corp of China (AVIC). The HH-100 drone, with a payload capacity of 700 kilograms (1,543 pounds) and a flight radius of 520 kilometres, is a precursor to AVIC’s upcoming TP2000 model. Scheduled for testing next year, the TP2000 will be capable of carrying up to 2 tons of cargo over distances four times longer than the HH-100.

The Future of Cargo and Passenger Drones in China

China’s commercial drone operations are already underway, with cargo drone firm Phoenix Wings, a subsidiary of delivery giant SF Express, making fresh fruit deliveries from Hainan to Guangdong. These deliveries are facilitated by Fengzhou-90 drones, developed by SF, demonstrating the practical applications of UAV technology in reducing delivery times and costs.

In addition to cargo, UAVs are poised to transform passenger transport. EHang Holdings, based in Guangzhou, received China’s first production certificate for a passenger-carrying drone earlier this year. This milestone highlights the potential of autonomous drones to offer taxi services, particularly in urban environments with limited space for conventional aviation facilities.

The growth of China’s low-altitude economy, recognised by the government as a new engine for economic expansion, is set to accelerate. Vertical mobility, including both passenger and cargo transport, is seen as a key driver of this emerging sector.

In a parallel development, manned commercial helicopter services are also expanding. For instance, a new route from Kunshan in Jiangsu province to Shanghai Pudong Airport promises to cut travel time significantly. Shanghai NewSky Heli Co anticipates 30,000 passengers annually on this route, which is set to open on August 18.
