Stellantis Denies Merger Talks with Renault
Stellantis is not planning any mergers or acquisitions, despite rumours of a potential tie-up with French competitor Renault. John Elkann, chairman of the French-Italian automaker, dismissed the speculation during an interview with AFP at the Paris Car Show. He emphasised that Stellantis is concentrating on its business operations and not on “distractions” like consolidation.
Elkann, who is also the largest shareholder through the Agnelli family’s investment firm EXOR, stated, “We, as Stellantis, consider that we have a competitive size.” This remark counters recent reports suggesting possible merger talks with Renault, which were denied earlier this month by Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares. Tavares had labelled the rumours as “pure speculation.”
Stellantis Prioritises Growth Over Consolidation
Elkann reaffirmed that the automaker is focused on its business strategy and growth. Although they may review its 14-brand portfolio, Tavares hinted that brands could be sold if they become unprofitable. Despite this, the company has rejected offers from Chinese competitors, signalling that now is not the time for any major consolidations or asset sales.
No Immediate Plans for Deconsolidation
Elkann made it clear that they are neither ready for consolidation nor deconsolidation. The company remains focused on its core operations, aiming to maintain its competitive edge without being swayed by external pressures for mergers or sales.
