Madrid Sets Deadline for Removal of Rental E-Scooters
Operators of rental e-scooters in Madrid have been given until October 25 to remove all their devices from the city’s streets, according to a statement from the mayor’s office on Tuesday. This decision follows widespread complaints about reckless driving and improper parking by e-scooter users.
Licenses Revoked Over Safety Concerns
The mayor’s office revoked the licenses of the three foreign operators—Lime, Dott, and Tier Mobility—last month. Officials stated that the companies failed to address concerns regarding user behaviour and parking management. These issues have been a major reason for public outcry, prompting the city to take decisive action.
The three companies, which together have approximately 2,000 e-scooters each in Madrid, were expected to improve their systems to control the circulation and parking of their vehicles. However, the mayor’s office said they did not meet the necessary requirements to regain their licences.
Operators’ Response to the Deadline
Amsterdam-based Dott and US-based Lime, whose scooters are also available through the Uber app, said they had not been officially informed of the October 25 deadline. Lime stated that they would take appropriate measures to comply once they receive formal notification. Meanwhile, Dott mentioned that they would review possible legal and operational steps after receiving the official document.
Germany’s Tier Mobility did not immediately comment on the situation.
Global Challenges for E-Scooter Sharing
Madrid’s decision reflects broader challenges faced by e-scooter sharing services in cities worldwide. Reckless riding on streets and sidewalks, combined with chaotic parking that clutters public spaces, has led to increasing opposition against these services. Many cities are now implementing stricter regulations to address these concerns and improve public safety.
