ESA’s (European Space Agency) First Formation Flying Mission Prepares to Launch
The ESA’s PROBA-3 mission, the world’s first mission designed for precision formation flying, is set for launch later this year. Comprising two spacecraft working in unison, PROBA-3 will study the sun’s corona, a highly dynamic outer region of the sun that influences Earth through events such as solar flares and mass ejections. Additionally, PROBA-3 will showcase formation flying technologies and conduct rendezvous experiments, laying the groundwork for future space exploration and observation missions.
Redwire’s Role in PROBA-3: Integration, Testing, and Key Components
Redwire, a critical partner in the PROBA-3 mission, played a key role in the spacecraft’s development. At its facility in Belgium, Redwire handled spacecraft integration and testing, ensuring both components of the mission could operate seamlessly as a single unit. The company provided the mission’s onboard computer, which will act as the spacecraft’s “brain,” and developed one of the mission’s significant technology demonstrations, the 3D Energetic Electron Spectrometer (3DEES), an advanced 3D spectrometer designed to measure energetic electrons in high detail.
Following the successful integration of the spacecraft, Redwire’s Operations team conducted thorough tests of both the main spacecraft units and their subsystems. After rigorous testing, the PROBA-3 spacecraft began its journey to the launch site in India, where final preparations will be made.
The Journey to India and Final Preparations
On October 31, the Redwire team carefully prepared PROBA-3 for transportation to the Satish Dhawan Space Centre near Chennai, India. After a final round of checks, the spacecraft were loaded onto a plane on November 4 for their journey to India. Upon arrival, the Redwire team performed functional tests to confirm that both spacecraft remained in optimal condition during transit. The team then secured the spacecraft for a road journey to the launch site.
At the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, the spacecraft will undergo further pre-launch testing and final integration with the PSLV-XL rocket provided by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Redwire has committed to documenting this exciting mission, capturing updates from the preparation stages through to launch.
