Dr V Narayanan: A Visionary Leader in Indian Space Exploration
Dr V Narayanan, a distinguished scientist and expert in rocket and spacecraft propulsion, assumed the prestigious roles of Secretary, Department of Space; Chairman, Space Commission; and Chairman, ISRO on 13 January 2025. His remarkable contributions span over four decades at ISRO, with prior leadership as the Director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC). Under his guidance, LPSC advanced critical technologies in liquid, semi-cryogenic, and cryogenic propulsion, cementing India’s position as a space power.
Key Contributions to Propulsion and Launch Vehicles
Dr Narayanan played a pivotal role in India’s space programmes. As Chairman of the LPSC-IPRC Coordination Committee, he oversaw assembly and testing of liquid propulsion systems at the ISRO Propulsion Complex in Tamil Nadu. His leadership of the Project Management Council-Space Transportation System (PMC-STS) was instrumental in managing operational and developmental launch vehicle programmes.
He was also pivotal in the Gaganyaan programme, heading the Human Rated Certification Board and ensuring the success of critical propulsion systems. His leadership contributed to the development of advanced cryogenic stages, semi-cryogenic systems, and green propulsion technologies for upcoming missions.
Achievements in Space Exploration
Dr Narayanan’s contributions include designing cryogenic engine systems for the GSLV Mk-II, establishing test facilities, and making the Cryogenic Upper Stage (CUS) operational. He led the development of the C25 cryogenic stage, which powered the LVM3 vehicle, enabling its maiden launch. His work ensured India’s self-reliance in cryogenic propulsion, placing the country among the few nations with such capabilities.
For Chandrayaan-3, Dr Narayanan’s teams delivered propulsion systems enabling a successful soft landing on the Moon’s south pole. His expertise also ensured the success of the PSLV C57/Aditya L1 mission, taking India to the forefront of solar exploration. Additionally, he contributed significantly to propulsion systems for Gaganyaan and other ambitious programmes like the Venus Orbiter and the Bharatiya Antariksha Station.
Academic Excellence and Recognitions
Dr Narayanan earned his M.Tech in Cryogenic Engineering and Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from IIT Kharagpur, where he received a Silver Medal for academic excellence. His research formed the foundation for India’s cryogenic propulsion systems. Recognised globally, he has received 26 prestigious awards, including the APJ Abdul Kalam Award, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Award for Chandrayaan-3, and international accolades like the 2024 Laurels for Team Achievement from the International Academy of Astronautics.
