Asteroid Lights Up Yakutia Sky with Fiery Display
An asteroid lit up the sky over Russia’s remote Yakutia region early Wednesday morning, creating a fiery spectacle before likely disintegrating in the atmosphere. Officials confirmed that no damage occurred during the event.
Authorities React Swiftly to Asteroid’s Descent
Yakutia’s emergencies ministry reported that all relevant agencies were on alert as the asteroid approached. However, its descent caused no harm to the region. Residents in Olekminsk and Lensk districts witnessed a comet-like tail and a bright flash during the celestial display.
Asteroid Details and Advance Prediction
The European Space Agency (ESA) provided key information about the asteroid, estimating its size at 70 cm (28 inches) in diameter. It entered Earth’s atmosphere at 1:15 a.m. local time (1615 GMT), approximately 12 hours after being detected.
The ESA credited global astronomers for contributing to its alert system, which accurately predicted the asteroid’s impact to within a 10-second margin.
A Spectacular but Harmless Event
Astronomer Alan Fitzsimmons of Queen’s University Belfast described the celestial rock as relatively small but visually striking. Speaking to New Scientist before the event, he noted that it would be visible across hundreds of kilometres and create a spectacular fireball.
