NSIL and Space Machines Company Sign Landmark Launch Service Agreement

NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), the commercial arm of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) under the Department of Space, has partnered with Space Machines Company, an Australian-Indian in-space servicing firm, for a Dedicated Launch Service Agreement. This pioneering collaboration aims to launch Space Machines Company’s second Optimus spacecraft, weighing 450kg, the largest Australian-designed and built spacecraft to date. The launch, scheduled for 2026, will utilise NSIL/ISRO’s Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV).

    A Historic Collaboration

The signing of the Launch Service Agreement was formally announced at the India Space Congress 2024 in Delhi. Rajat Kulshrestha, CEO and Co-Founder of Space Machines Company, and Mr. Radhakrishnan Durairaj, Chairman and Managing Director of NSIL, expressed their enthusiasm for this groundbreaking venture.

“This collaboration with Space Machines Company exemplifies the spirit of international cooperation in space and highlights the strategic partnership between Australia and India,” said Mr. Radhakrishnan Durairaj. “As a Launch service provider for the Optimus spacecraft, we are fostering the growth of our respective space industries and contributing to sustainable exploration and utilisation of space.”

    Advancing Space Innovation

The Space MAITRI (Mission for Australia-India’s Technology, Research, and Innovation) mission signifies a significant milestone in Australia-India space relations. The mission focuses on debris management and sustainability, promoting responsible space operations. Rajat Kulshrestha highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating, “By combining our innovative spacecraft capabilities with India’s proven launch expertise, we are strengthening the ties between our nations’ space sectors and demonstrating our shared commitment to sustainable space operations.”

    Strengthening Research and Development

Space Machines Company has established a research and development office in Bangalore, India, near the ISRO headquarters. This strategic move facilitates collaboration with Indian partners, including Ananth Technologies, in various aspects of missions, integration, testing, technological developments, and supply chain management.

Founded in 2018 by Rajat Kulshrestha and George Freney, Space Machines Company aims to revolutionise the space economy by providing cost-effective and flexible transportation services for satellites. The company’s vision is to build a future where space works for everyone, addressing the lack of satellite servicing infrastructure and ensuring satellites receive necessary support.

Key executives at Space Machines Company include Rajat Kulshrestha (CEO & Co-Founder), Mark Ramsey (Chief Operating Officer), and George Freney (Co-Founder).

    Future Prospects

This collaboration between NSIL and Space Machines Company is a significant step forward in the field of space exploration and innovation. It represents a strong commitment to international cooperation and sustainable space operations, setting a precedent for future partnerships between nations.
