9-Million-Year-Old Shark Fossil of Ancient Shark Relative Unearthed in Peru

Paleontologists in Peru have revealed a remarkable discovery: a 9-million-year-old shark fossil belonging to a relative of the great white shark. This ancient predator once roamed the southern Pacific Ocean and preyed on sardines.

    Details of the Fossil Discovery

The fossil of Cosmopolitodus hastalis, a nearly complete specimen, was unearthed in Peru’s Pisco Basin. This desert region, about 235 kilometres south of Lima, is well-known for yielding fossilised remains of marine species. Experts believe this shark is an ancestor of the great white shark, although it is now extinct.

The species was formidable in size, with teeth measuring up to 8.9 centimetres (3.5 inches) and adults growing as long as seven metres, roughly the size of a small boat. According to Cesar Augusto Chacaltana, an engineer with Peru’s geological and mining institute (INGEMMET), the fossil demonstrates “exceptional fossilisation.”

Presentation and Diet of the Ancient Predator

Researchers showcased the fossil at a presentation, displaying several glass urns containing the remains. One urn featured an imposing, sharp-toothed jaw. Paleontologist Mario Urbina highlighted the rarity of such complete shark fossils, noting the find’s significance.

Interestingly, the shark’s stomach contained remnants of sardines, indicating that these fish were a primary food source. Urbina also pointed out that anchovies, a modern staple for many marine predators, had not yet evolved at the time.

Other Significant Fossil Finds in Peru

The Pisco Basin has yielded numerous ancient marine fossils. In November, paleontologists announced the discovery of a 10-million-year-old crocodile fossil from the region. Earlier, in April, researchers displayed the fossilised skull of a river dolphin, the largest known to date, which lived 16 million years ago in the Amazon.

With each discovery, Peru continues to solidify its reputation as a treasure trove for uncovering ancient marine life.
