In a significant advancement for Indian space enthusiasts, pilot Gopichand Thotakura is poised to become the first Indian space tourist, joining the elite crew of Blue Origin’s New Shepard-25 (NS-25) mission. This voyage will see him travel beyond the Earth’s atmosphere alongside five other crew members, crossing the Karman line that demarcates the boundary between our planet’s atmosphere and outer space.

Gopichand Thotakura is not just an entrepreneur but also a seasoned pilot with a rich history of aviation that spans various types of aircraft, including bush planes, aerobatic planes, seaplanes, gliders, and hot air balloons. A graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Science, Thotakura’s early fascination with flying led him to learn piloting before even driving a car. According to Blue Origin, he has also served as an international medical jet pilot, showcasing his versatile aviation skills.

Currently, Thotakura manages Preserve Life Corp, a holistic wellness and health center located near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. His adventurous spirit recently took him to the peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro, highlighting his penchant for challenging endeavours.

The NS-25 mission is noted not only for its crew’s diverse backgrounds but also for its environmental consciousness. Blue Origin has emphasized the sustainability of the New Shepard rocket, with nearly 99% of its dry mass being reusable, including critical components like the booster and engine. The rocket’s engine runs on liquid oxygen and hydrogen, ensuring that the only byproduct during flight is water vapor, thus eliminating carbon emissions.

Adding a personal touch, each crew member of the NS-25 mission will carry a postcard into space, representing the hopes and dreams of young people worldwide through Blue Origin’s foundation, Club for the Future.

The mission roster also includes historical figures like former Air Force Captain Ed Dwight, who was chosen by President John F Kennedy in 1961 as the first Black astronaut candidate for the USA, though he never flew in space.

While the launch date remains unannounced, the anticipation builds for this mission, which promises to mark a new chapter in sustainable space exploration. Blue Origin has successfully conducted six crewed flights since July 2021, with passengers including paying customers and special guests, further proving their capabilities in space tourism.
